The center will be open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Onaway center is tentatively scheduled to close Monday, August 31, 2026. DNR Burn Permit Webpage Update: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has updated its burn permit page to be more user friendly. You can now select your county using a dropdown menu (on the right side of the screen for desktop users or below the map on mobile devices) after tapping “Can I burn today?” Once a county is selected, users can view township-specific information, including whether burning is permitted that day and any restrictions in place. The site no longer supports clicking directly on the map. Those who prefer not to use a computer or mobile device can still check burn conditions by calling (866) 922-BURN (2876). DNR-issued burn permits apply only to the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula.

Septic/Well Inspection and Property Transfer Ordinance Amendment: The Septic/Well Inspection and Property Transfer Ordinance went into effect on November 8, 2025, and requires inspections of private septic and well systems when certain properties are sold, transferred or have no septic permit. This ordinance was amended on January 12, 2026, to allow property transfers to occur without the required District Helath Department 4 (DHD4) septic and well evaluation, provided the parties agree to place the burden of obtaining the evaluation on the transferee. The amendment goes into effect on February 14, 2026. A brochure (which also serves as a time-of-transfer notification) is available to help summarize the requirements of the amended ordinance and answer common questions about how the amended ordinance affects property owners and buyers. You can pick up a copy of the brochure at the township hall or download it here If you’re unsure whether your property has a septic permit, you can complete a Request for Review of Public Records and submit it to District Health Department #4. This form is available at the township hall or you can download by clicking here. To schedule a septic inspection, you must call District Health Department at (989)734-4723. You will need to submit an Application for Existing Private Onsite Water & Wastewater System Inspection. This application is available at the township hall or you can download it by clicking here
